“I denied myself nothing my eyes desired;
I refused my heart no pleasure.
My heart took delight in all my labor,
and this was the reward for all my toil.
Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done
and what I had toiled to achieve,
everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind;
nothing was gained under the sun.”
The concept of pleasure in nothing new. We use our time as we please, to do the things that please us. This is the way humanity has always functioned. But with God in charge, our life should look different. Feel different. We understand that there is purpose and promise in everything, even the hours of our day.
Tonight I want to challenge you to completely disconnect from technology from 6pm till you go to sleep. If you are going to bed like a good early bird, that means you only have 3-4 hours without it. What would you fill that time with if the television was turned off? Who would you talk to and invest your time in if you weren’t texting anyone? I believe our more important things would become the most important things if we give them the space they need.
1.) Read in Ecclesiastes this morning. Read as far as you feel led. What are some observations about the text? How is “time” considered good and bad?
2.) Are there parts of your life that feel like “toiling?” Ask God what He says about those parts.
3.) Pray for guidance from the Holy Spirit for how to spend your hours off tonight. Having a plan for success makes all the difference! Share with your group in the morning about what God revealed to in your time-off.
