Breaking habits. Get it?
Man, we are funny in #theFives 😉
“To put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”
-Ephesians 4:22-24
We said at beginning of this week that prayer doesn’t have to be perfect, and we stand by that statement. But there can be habits we formulated in our prayers that can hinder our growth. Breaking habits is essential to taking our prayers to the next level. And I’m not even talking about “bad” habits… Anything we do habitually can eventually box us in, where the process of relationship becomes more important than the relationship.
Today we want to break the habits and let God stretch us a bit. Are you ready? It’s time for something new- not simply for the sake of shaking it up, but because our walk need constant surrender.
Let’s pray:
1.) Reflect over the habits you have already established for this session of #theFives. What about those habits is God asking you to let go of? It may be the location you pray in, to starting to journal your prayers, or even to sit and listen for the hour and not ask questions.
2.) Bad habits are hard to break as well. Ask God what habits you have in the language you use in your prayers that need to break. Do you apologize for praying for yourself? Do you ignore images you see in your mind, or discount the way God is speaking to you because it doesn’t look like everyone else?
3.) Try something different today, in faith. Even if you aren’t sure you heard God correctly, test it out. Try sitting in that new place or letting go of some patterns when you pray. Share with your group what God reveals in your hour today.
