“When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.“
John 13: 12-14
Jesus understood the impact of physically serving others. By meeting people’s physical needs, He gained access to their hearts. Intimacy is built when we are able to yield to our own desires to meet the needs of others. Jesus humbly put others above himself everywhere he went– no task was too small and no person insignificant.
For us, this kind of sacrifice means we keep our eyes, hearts, and schedules open to go where the Spirit leads. God wants to use you in unique ways to serve others- will you be open to His leading?
One of the most loving things we can do is give our time and use our talents to serve others. Whether it is making dinner for a family in crisis, serving in a local ministry, or simply writing a note of encouragement, serving others connects them to Jesus in an special way.
What gifts do you have that can use to serve others? Are you ready to offer your gifts as a sacrifice to love others well?
1.) Journal about your natural talents. Are you a good cook? Are you an artist? Write as many as you can– no talent is insignificant to God!
2.) What has prevented you from serving? Do you need to open your eyes to see areas to serve? Is your heart open to love others? Do you need to make room for service by removing other things from your schedule?
3.) Take time this week to research ministries you can serve in your area and make an effort to connect with them!
