“He must become greater; I must become less.”
John 3:30 NIV
Grace is a gift we could never earn. God already fully accepts us because of Christ’s sacrifice and we don’t have to earn that love. What a relief! However, we struggle with this concept. Sometimes we believe we are unworthy of His love, so we begin to work to receive it. Or maybe we see God’s favor in other people’s lives, so out of our jealousy we begin to try to recreate it.
When we are honest with ourselves, we will begin to see that our human nature craves a high-five for a job well done. Our hard work begins to feel like validation for receiving favor, and we think we somehow made it happen. It starts the vicious cycle of elevating ourselves above God. To combat this, we must become less and God become greater.
Let’s examine the lies we’ve believed about earning God’s grace and ask Him to help us understand the truth of His love.
Let’s Pray:
1.) Look up the biblical definition of “grace.” What does that mean to you, personally? Feel free to look up Bible verses to bring clarity as well.
2.) Write out any lies you have believed about your performance/earning God’s love and grace. Record the emotions that accompany those lies whenever you think of them.
3.) Take time to thank God for his extravagant grace that you have been given! Gratefulness will point your heart back in the right direction.
